Ripcord Design officially became 100% carbon neutral in 2022

Summary

As of today, Ripcord Design is officially a carbon neutral green web hosting provider. All of our services, specifically hosting, are carbon net zero, which means all of our clients' hosted websites are 100% carbon neutral as well.

How did we do it?

We started by estimating our total carbon emissions (across all client websites) with the audit tool at websitecarbon.com.

Our services and websites are well-optimized, so we had low impact to start with. We took the extra step to get to 100% carbon neutrality by supporting reforestation projects through Carbonfund.org.

Why did we do it?

  1. It was easy and cheap to do.
  2. It was something we wanted for our clients. Smart, responsible small businesses are looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact. This was an easy way to complement those efforts on the digital side.
  3. It fits with who we are. We're all about making things better for the web and the people who use it. That means being efficient, professional, and smart about how we do things.

Does it make any difference?

The internet accounts for around 4% of global carbon emissions. That's more than the entire airline industry. And that number is expected to double by 2025.

Ripcord Design hosts fewer than 100 small business clients, so our impact is negligible. However, just as every kg of CO2 contributes a little more to the problem, every kg removed helps.

Is climate change even real?

Yes.
